mr. chairman， senator thurmond， members of the committee， my name is anita f. hill， and i am a professor of law at the university of oklahoma. i was born on a farm in okmulgee county， oklahoma， in 1956. i am the youngest of 13 children. i had my early education in okmulgee county. my father， albert hill， is a farmer in that area. my mother's name is irma hill. she is also a farmer and a housewife.

my childhood was one of a lot of hard work and not much money， but it was one of solid family affection， as represented by my parents. i was reared in a religious atmosphere in the baptist faith， and i have been a member of the antioch baptist church in tulsa， oklahoma， since 1983. it is a very warm part of my life at the present time.

for my undergraduate work， i went to oklahoma state university and graduated from there in 1977. i am attaching to this statement a copy of my resume for further details of my education.

i graduated from the university with academic honors and proceeded to the yale law school， where i received my jd degree in 1980. upon graduation from law school， i became a practicing lawyer with the washington， dc， firm of ward， hardraker， and ross.

in 1981， i was introduced to now judge thomas by a mutual friend. judge thomas told me that he was anticipating a political appointment， and he asked if i would be interested in working with him. he was， in fact， appointed as assistant secretary of education for civil rights. after he had taken that post， he asked if i would become his assistant， and i accepted that position.

in my early period there， i had two major projects. the first was an article i wrote for judge thomas' signature on the education of minority students. the second was the organization of a seminar on high-risk students which was abandoned because judge thomas transferred to the eeoc where he became the chairman of that office.

during this period at the department of education， my working relationship with judge thomas was positive. i had a good deal of responsibility and independence. i thought he respected my work and that he trusted my judgment. after approximately three months of working there， he asked me to go out socially with him.

what happened next and telling the world about it are the two most difficult things -- experiences of my life. it is only after a great deal of agonizing consideration and sleeplenumber -- a great number of sleeplenights tha(t i am able to talk of these unpleasant matters to anyone but my close friends.

i declined the invitation to go out socially with him and explained to him that i thought it would jeopardize what at the time i considered to be a very good working relationship. i had a normal social life with other men outside of the office. i believed then， as now， that having a social relationship with a person who was supervising my work would be ill-advised. i was very uncomfortable with the idea and told him so.

i thought that by saying no and explaining my reasons my employer would abandon his social suggestions. however， to my regret， in the following few weeks， he continued to ask me out on several occasions. he pressed me to justify my reasons for saying no to him. these incidents took place in his office or mine. they were in the form of private conversations which would not have been overheard by anyone else.

my working relationship became even more strained when judge thomas began to use work situations to discuse-x. on these occasions， he would call me into his office for reports on education issues and projects， or he might suggest that， because of the time pressures of his schedule， we go to lunch to a government cafeteria. after a brief discussion of work， he would turn the conversation to a discussion of se-xual matters.

his conversations were very vivid. he spoke about acts that he had seen in pornographic films involving such matters as women having se-x with animals and films showing group se-x or rape scenes. he talked about pornographic materials depicting inpiduals with large penises or large breasts involved in various se-x acts. on several occasions， thomas told me graphically of his own se-xual prowess.

because i was extremely uncomfortable talking about se-x with him at all and particularly in such a graphic way， i told him that i did not want to talk about these subjects. i would also try to change the subject to education matters or to nonse-xual personal matters such as his background or his beliefs. my efforts to change the subject were rarely successful.

As middle school students in Beijing, we should take on more responsibilities for our capital city”s environment. Any action we take will affect the appearance of the city. Therefore, we should start with ourselves, act now, and make every possible effort. But how You may ask.

There are a lot of things we can do in our daily lives. We all know the fact that

Beijing is frequently assaulted by sand storms every year. Forests and lands have been degraded by agricultural and industrial activities. To revive those desert lands is beyond our ability, but we can plant trees around our schools or in our neighborhood communities. If everybody does so, there will be a green Beijing and we will have a Green Olympic.

I don”t know whether you”ve noticed that some students don”t want to walk to school; their parents have to drive them to school every day. But nowadays, the air is polluted with automobile exhausts. What can we do about it Ride on your bike to school and enjoy exercise! It will not only have significant benefits for your health, but also help improving our environment. In addition, if you don”t drive cars, you will not go to the car wash. That will save large amount of water. If everybody does something, there will be a green Beijing and we will have a Green Olympic.

Think it over, my friends. The things we can do are definitely not unrealistic. Although we cannot provide with a clean energy source, achieve a better sewage treatment system, or stop any industry from using hazardous chemicals and releasing hazardous wastes, we can save every drop of water and protect every patch of green. Make Beijing a more beautiful city, where green patches are everywhere and blue sky can be seen clearly above our heads.

A Green Beijing Olympic is asking for action. Act now.

2008，一個(gè)再普通不過(guò)的數(shù)字，但是，一提到它，會(huì)讓多少中國(guó)人熱血沸騰！一個(gè)數(shù)字怎么會(huì)有如此大的魔力？答案是簡(jiǎn)單而神圣的，在這一年里，北京將舉辦第29屆奧林匹克運(yùn)動(dòng)會(huì)，那時(shí)，世界的目光將齊聚北京，而北京，也將以主人的身份，展現(xiàn)她最美麗的風(fēng)采！

2008，北京的奧運(yùn)將是一屆綠色的奧運(yùn)、科技的奧運(yùn)、人文的奧運(yùn)。其中，綠色奧運(yùn)是三個(gè)最重要的理念之一。這充分表現(xiàn)出我們要辦好一屆環(huán)保奧運(yùn)的決心和信心！然而，要實(shí)現(xiàn)這一目標(biāo)，我們要走的路還十分艱辛。

早上好！

Dear teachers and schoolmates, good morning!

今天我講話的題目是《自信是健康成長(zhǎng)的翅膀》。首先我要給大家講一個(gè)故事。有一個(gè)牧羊人，帶著兩個(gè)兒子去牧羊，一群大雁在天上飛，孩子說(shuō)"我要能飛就好了",于是爸爸把孩子們帶到山頭上，爸爸說(shuō)"只要想飛起來(lái)就一定能飛起來(lái)".孩子朝思慕想要上天，他們用自信編制自己的夢(mèng)想，最后終于上天了，他們就是美國(guó)的萊特兄弟！1903年12月的一天，他們懷著飛翔的夢(mèng)，展開(kāi)自信的翅膀，制造了世界上第一架飛機(jī)飛上了天空，圓了人類(lèi)千年的夢(mèng)想！

The topic of my speech today is "Self-Confidence as the Wings of Healthy Growth." First of all, I want to tell you a story. A shepherd took his two sons to the field, a group of geese were flying in the sky, and the first boy said, "It would be great if I could fly." So the shepherd took his sons to the hills.  The dad said, "You will be able to fly, as long you really want it." The children dreamt of flying in the sky for many years.  They were confident that if they followed their dreams they would finally succeed.  These boys were the Wright Brothers of the United States. One day, in December 1903, still with the dream of flying, they spread the wings of confidence and created the world”s first plane to ever fly in the sky.  They realized the dream of every human that had ever lived: to fly!

這就是自信的力量。在我們的健康成長(zhǎng)中需要自信，在我們的學(xué)習(xí)生活中需要自信。那么，自信是什么呢？

This is the power of confidence. We need to be confident to growup healthy.  We need to be confident in our studies as well as in daily life. So, what is self-confidence

自信是課堂上的踴躍發(fā)言。不必緊張，不必害怕，勇敢發(fā)表自己的見(jiàn)解，即使說(shuō)得未必正確，也沒(méi)有人會(huì)譏諷你；即使說(shuō)得結(jié)結(jié)巴巴，同學(xué)們也會(huì)為你叫好。

Confidence in yourself is to speak in class enthusiastically. We needn’t be nervous, we don”t have to be afraid.  We should be brave in expressing our views, even if they”re not perfect.  No one will laugh at you. Even if you don”t express yourself clearly, the classmates will cheer for you.  Never be afraid to make mistakes, it is only through making mistakes that we can learn and grow as people.

自信是遭遇失敗后的再次啟程。愛(ài)迪生為發(fā)明電燈曾試驗(yàn)過(guò)1000多種燈絲，每次失敗，他都不氣餒，有人嘲笑他，他卻自豪地說(shuō)："我發(fā)現(xiàn)了1000多種物質(zhì)不適合做燈絲。"這是怎樣的勇氣和自信??！

Confidence in yourself does NOT mean to never fail.  It means to start again and continue trying even after your failure. Thomas Edison invented the electric lightbulb.  Before he succeeded, he tested more than 1000 kinds of filaments and failed every time.  He was not discouraged.  When someone laughed at him, he said proudly, "I have found more than 1000 kinds of material are not suitable for filament." How courageous and confident!  As the great South African leader Nelson Mandela said, "Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up."

同學(xué)們，在你們的背后有自信這一對(duì)翅膀嗎？如果沒(méi)有，就來(lái)聽(tīng)聽(tīng)我的建議，為自己也插上一對(duì)自信的翅膀。

Dear schoolmates, do you have a pair of confident wings   If not, please accept my advice, wear a pair of confident wings for yourself.

首先，我們要認(rèn)識(shí)自己的長(zhǎng)處和優(yōu)點(diǎn)。沒(méi)有人是完美的，但是每個(gè)人都有自己優(yōu)秀的地方。為你擁有的特長(zhǎng)和優(yōu)點(diǎn)感到自豪，多替自己加加油，說(shuō)聲："其實(shí)我也很棒！"

First of all, we have to know our strengths and advantages as well as our weaknesses. No one is perfect, but everyone has their good aspects. Be proud of your special hobbies and advantages and often remind yourself that: "In fact, I am great!"

其次，設(shè)定目標(biāo)，做好準(zhǔn)備。要經(jīng)常鼓勵(lì)自己，展現(xiàn)自己優(yōu)秀的一面，讓別人認(rèn)可你，你的自信就會(huì)慢慢提升的。培養(yǎng)多一些愛(ài)好，多交一些良友，讓你變得自信滿滿。

Second, set a goal and get ready. Encourage yourself often. Show your good side, let others recognize it and your confidence will improve slowly.  Develop new hobbies, make some good friends, and allow yourself to become confident.

富強(qiáng)的中國(guó)奠定了我們自信的基礎(chǔ)，學(xué)校和老師給了我們自信的底氣。同學(xué)們，讓我們插上"自信的翅膀",讓自信之心充滿整個(gè)校園，讓自信之聲響起來(lái)，讓自信之手揮動(dòng)起來(lái)，提高我們的自信心吧！

Our parents and our early successes have laid the foundation for our confidence. The school, our classmates and the teachers help us to grow that confidence. Dear schoolmates, I say to you, let us wear the wings of the "confidence," let self-confident hearts fill the whole campus, let confident hands lift each other up and improve our self-confidence!
